The goals of perioperative pain management are to relieve suffering, achieve early mobilization after surgery, reduce length of hospital stay, and achieve patient satisfaction. We strongly believe perioperative patient evaluation and planning is integral to preoperative pain management. We perform proactive individualized planning as an anticipatory strategy for postoperative analgesia that integrates pain management into the perioperative care of our patients. We consider various Patient factors to type of surgery, expected severity of postoperative pain, underlying medical conditions (e.g., presence of respiratory or cardiac disease, allergies), the risk–benefit ratio for the available techniques, and a patient’s preferences or previous experience with pain to formulate a patient plan.
